Pseudosasa japonica 'Tsutsumiana'

Maximum height: 18 ft.
(More often 3 ft. for us)
Maximum diameter: 1 in.
(More often .25 in.)
Minimum temperature: 0ºF
(The roots are at least 10ºF more hardy.)

We dig species in this genus in November or December. They are dug, potted, and overwintered to be ready for sale the following spring. Orders for species in this genus need to be placed in the fall if you need the plants for the following spring.

We occasionally have Pseudosasa japonica and the variety 'Tsutsumiana' available. Very, very limited supply.

The bloated internodes of this bamboo gave rise to its common name of Green Onion Bamboo. The culms resemble one green onion stacked one atop another.

This bamboo acts more as a herbaceous ornamental grass here in zone 5, but it returns from the roots each spring.

It's very slow to increase and behaves much more like a clumping bamboo instead of a runner, despite its classification.

Pseudosasa japonica 'Tsutsumiana' is one of very few bamboo species that can be grown indoors as well as out. When grown indoors a south facing window is preferred.

This is one of the traditional species used in bonsai tray plantings and in penjing.
