This timber bamboo is one of only two bamboos under that classification that we can grow here in zone 5. The other one is Phyllostachys atrovaginata.
For the first few years our Phyllostachys parvifolia did top-kill. Since it has gotten settled in it has not top-killed and has indeed out performed both Phyllostachys bissetii and Phyllostachys nuda. It does wind burn and gets some twig damage, but rebuds on the old culms in the spring. It has not top-killed now for several winters in a row.
