For a limited time we are offering rooted cuttings from our Rokkakudo willow (Salix babylonica 'Rokkakudo')
The Rokkakudo willow is thought to be the oldest named plant cultivar in existence. Said to have been exported from Korea to Japan at the same time as porcelain technology.
The cultivar has been maintained since that time by rooted cuttings so it has remained true to type and without any variations that can come about due to reproduction via seed.
The most famous specimen is located on a side street off of Karasuma Road, Kyoto, Japan.
The cultivar is somewhat rare in the US. It is a semi-dwarf tree that weeps just like its full-sized counterpart. It ultimately reaches a height of just around 20 Ft with a 10-15 Ft canopy spread. Our tree is five years old and is still just 7 Ft in height. 'Rokkakudo' is a good choice for people with smaller yards that are too small for the full sized species.
It is hardy to USDA zones 5-8 (except south-west areas). Does best in moist, yet well drained soil, and full sun (6+ hours of direct sunlight daily).
Rooted cuttings are to be made available spring of 2007. Sizes will vary from 6 to 10 inches. They will be available for $15 from David Rogers. Shipping via USPS Priority Mail is included. Sorry no shipment to AK, AZ, CA, and HI. The cost goes towards providing feed and care for the birds of Project Onagadori, the breeding program focussing on selecting for the required traits to produce Onagadori in the US.
If you would like to request your own Rokkakudo willow, please e-mail David Rogers.
Due to the cultivar's slightly more fragile nature than the species, we can offer no guarantee of how it will perform in your location.
